Diabetic Neuropathy
Diabetic Neuropathy
Overview of Diabetic Neuropathies
Currently, over 20 million Americans are affected by diabetes, which is a life-long disease that causes exceedingly high levels of sugar in the blood. Of all of those who live with diabetes, there are many who will during the progression of the disease suffer nerve damage - also known as diabetic neuropathy. This damage will vary in severity, and in some instances will cause no symptoms that the person will suffer from.
In other instances, the damage will manifest in many different ways. Symptoms can include pain, numbness in the limbs, feet and hands, as well as problems arising in virtually every organ system. More than half of people who currently have diabetes will suffer from diabetic neuropathy, and typically, those who suffer are those who are older and have had diabetes for a longer period of time. Other contributing symptoms include being overweight or having an excessively high level of blood fat or blood pressure.
Diabetic Neuropathy: Understanding Treatment
There is not currently a cure for those who suffer from diabetic neuropathy, but there are promising ways in which steps can be taken to prevent future damage and to help patients live a more comfortable life. These can be as simple as bringing blood sugar to a more comfortable level, as well as taking special care of the feet with specially made shoes. There are also several available medications to help with pain.
